Spine, pelvis and shoulder stabilization
Joint mobility and strengthening through the complete range of motion of all joints
Instead of isolating muscle groups, the whole body is trained, integrating the upper and lower extremities with the trunk. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles. Pilates is a highly effective form of exercise for all levels of fitness from the beginner to the elite athlete to individuals recovering from injury or surgery and everyone in-between.
Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920's. He created a system of controlled, precise movements he called "Contrology". Contrology is defined as defined as "complete coordination of body, mind and spirit". Pilates emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement. The Pilates Method is performed on specially designed spring-resistant exercise apparatus (Equipment Pilates) and/or on the floor (Mat Pilates).
